OCW for Alzheimer's

Alzheimer Prevention

Can Alzheimer's Disease be inherited?

You are surely wondering whether it would make sense and be useful to take precautions to protect yourself from Alzheimer's, especially if you have a case of Alzheimer's in your family or your father or mother has contracted it.  The answer is unequivocal: “Yes, it makes absolute sense to take precautions to protect yourself from Alzheimer's, since the disease can, in large part, be inherited .'  The latest scientific studies confirm what was in any case already known: Alzheimer's is spread through genetic material.  The inherited genes are the so-called ApoE4 gene and the TOMM40 gene, also called simply the 'Alzheimer's Gene.'

What are the Alzheimer's genes ApoE4 or TOMM40?

In a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in July 2009 it says:

"People with the Alzheimer's gene begin to have memory declines tied to aging before they reach 60, even if they have no clinical symptoms of dementia".

The study goes on to say that there is a number of firms which offer tests from which you can find out whether you have inherited the Alzheimer's gene ApoE4, including: Island's Decode Genetics' DecodeME and the 23andME Test.

How great is the danger of contracting Alzheimer's if you have these genes?

Where the ApoE4 gene is present, it continues, the danger of contracting Alzheimer's increases by 50%.  However, it does not necessarily follow that you will contract Alzheimer's, though there is a very high likelihood.

A second gene, the TOMM40 gene, is also said to significantly increase the risk of contracting Alzheimer's, as can be heard from the University of North Carolina, USA.  Dr. Allen Roses at Duke University points out that both the ApoE4 and TOMM40 genes are very closely related and that if both are present together the danger that Alzheimer's will be inherited rises to 80-95%.

Doctors usually refrain from having patients tested for the Alzheimer's genes, however, because a positive result causes stress.

However, researchers at the University of Boston have found out that this does not quite correspond to the truth, since according to their study, subjects who received a positive result- i.e. the results showed that they had inherited the Alzheimer's gene- did not show a stressed reaction.  Their reaction was no more worried or depressed than people in the placebo group, said Dr. Robert Green in a summary of the study.

Prevention is the best protection

Alzheimer's researchers are agreed that prevention is the best method for avoiding the disease- i.e. to take precautions against the disease even before it manifests itself and/or to prevent it.

The maxim that the sooner the disease is recognised, the better the chances of doing something about it also applies to an Alzheimer's diagnosis.

Prof. David Snowdon is certain:
that prevention is the best protection from Alzheimer's, especially and above all if you have a case of Alzheimer's in the family.
He says:

Prof. David Snowdon says it as follows:

"By the time you have memory problems – it is already too late, which means the disease has already advanced. You possibly should act long time before that happens to try to prevent it from happening.“

Other preventative measures

Today it is very well known that intellectual activity also affords a certain degree of protection from Alzheimer's.  So if you do a job that requires a lot of intellectual effort, or if you read a lot, for example, these things represent a preventative factor against Alzheimer's.  You can also play a musical instrument, as odd as that may sound:  Musicians- people who play an instrument actively, are much less likely of ever contracting Alzheimer's.  The reasons for this are not entirely clear as yet, but musicians belong to the group of people who have a kind of 'near-immunity' against Alzheimer's.  So why not let the children learn an instrument- against the backdrop that it's not just nice to listen too, but can also protect them against Alzheimer's.  Whether it makes much sense to learn an instrument if you are already advanced in years remains to be seen- since at that stage it is much easier and more convenient to take a OCW - Old-Clear-Wise capsule every day.
